Makeup Memories - My First Lipstick | Afrobella

Makeup Memories – My First Lipstick

bella | Sep 21, 2011 | Comments 37

In the Eighties my mom was all about red and orange lipstick, to match her red or orange nails. It was an interesting time in the beauty world – in those days beauty was very much about power. In the magazines there were power suits armed with thick shoulder pads, and the perfumes of the era were pungent and had one word names like Poison, Obsession, and Ysatis. I found it all kind of comical. I remember my mom trying to tell me that shoulder pads made for a better silhouette. All of these years later…I’m thinking she might have had something there.

I didn’t want my first lipstick to be red, or orange. Because of my experience working at our family friend’s cosmetics and perfume store, I had the opportunity to become intimately familiar with the lipsticks for sale in Trinidad. I swatched every shade of Sacha Cosmetics lipstick that we had. And so when the time came for me to buy my own lipstick, I already knew which one I wanted. In this vintage post I mistakenly called it Copper Sunset. The real name was Copper Rosa. This was in the early Nineties.

Behold. Copper Rosa

Copper Rosa was subtly stunning – the kind of lippie that brown skinned beauties feel safe wearing. Not too bold and bright, and it went really well with my skin tone. I felt so grown up when I wore it. I think I was all of 13 years old. 14, tops. I remember bringing my beloved Copper Rosa with me to high school bazaars. Fatima Mayfair. The few precious unsupervised social events I was allowed to attend at that age. I remember sitting in Long Circular Mall’s food court with a group of girls I knew — and boys, ZOMG. I was carefully applying my Copper Rosa right there with everyone around when a loudmouthed older girl that never liked me (trust, the feeling was mutual) reprimanded me loudly. “You’re only supposed to put on lipstick in the bathroom! Not in front of other people!” Her intent was to make me feel ashamed, and I definitely did at the time. Please note that Emily Post doesn’t turn up her nose at quickly applying lipstick at the table.

Copper Rosa was my road buddy through the times where I agonized whether or not boys would like me, or whether or not my high school friends were truly my friends. My first lipstick. I don’t remember when we parted ways – I remember towards the end, buying my first lip brush to use the remants that remained. I don’t remember throwing the used tube away, but maybe I did when it was time for me to ship off to college, when I got rid of many of my childhood things.

Writing this post made me want to go back to Trinidad, so I could track down a tube of Sacha Cosmetics lipstick and remember the times.
Do you remember your first lipstick? Tell me about it! What was the brand and color, and where did you wear it?

  1. Mid 80′s – Chocolate Raspberry by Fashion Fair. My first perfect pinkish purple.

  • Marshafari says:

It was a Revlon. Deep shade of purple. Back in the 90′s when the Revlon tube was a black cylinder with 2 thin gold bands around it. I think I swiped it from my youngest aunt then. And if I’m not mistaken it was something like Chocolate Berry or a name close to it. I felt like the most beautiful girl wearing it then…and oh, how I guarded it, digging down into the remains when it sadly came to an end, with a Qtip. Thanks for jolting these memories back Patrice. :)

  • LocalCeleb says:

Fashion Fair Rum Raisin, I wore it to my first college party..I thought I was smokin’ hot in this shade..

  • April says:

My first lipstick was Wet n’ Wild I think the number was #156 (purple/pink) when I put that lipstick on I felt like all eyes were on me!!! I think I just found a lipstick similar to it; MAC Violetta!! I can’t wait to try it!!!!

  • Cosmolude says:

My first lipstick was by Cover Girl, I don’t remember the name of the color, but it was a darker pink color. I mainly wore it to (high) school. I only wore mascara and eyeliner at the time so lipstick was a big deal and the only color I had on my face. I stopped wearing lipstick senior year so I totally forgot about it.

  • Max says:

Oh man. My first lipstick was this rich purple by Brucci. This was the cheap stuff you could find at any drug store or Korean beauty supply in NYC. And they always had the nail color to match. You couldn’t tell me nothing with my matching lips and nails. Later on I got hip to Iman’s awesome lipstick in Jaguar, which was a matte brown.

  • Zakiyyah says:

My first official lipstick was a Wet and Wild black somewhere around 99/2000. Prior to that, I would take my moms foundation and put it on my lips with some gloss. ( it also served as a highlight color in my hair and the occasional coverup the eczema. Yeah, I was doing the absolute most.

  • Now I am trying so hard to remember. I remember that Covergirl Lipslicks in Bronze was my thing in high school, also a shade called Cozumel Rose from some drugstore line I don’t think exists anymore.

  • Angela says:

I think my first lipstick was a Wet & Wild shade, a deep fuchsia color. I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup till I was 16 and I was so excited.

  • Keisha says:

My first lipstick was from shades of you, remember that brand…a pinkish gold lipstick that made it’s debut at my sweet sixteen!

  • Purple says:

Lovely, evocative post. My first was Island Beauty or something like that. A deep purple.

  • Jamie says:

My first lipstick was Clinique Tenderheart. I wish I knew then what I know now about lipstick ingredients.

  • miss mango-moods says:

it was Fashion Fair, and i cant remember the colour name but the tone would have been in the red brown family. my mother bought it for me for christmas one year when i wasnt expecting to get anything because she was preaching ‘the value of sacrifice’ all season (we had just built and moved into our 7 bedroom house).

  • Markeshia says:

Cute post! My mom actually bought me a little kit of Covergirl makeup that included that clear mascara that most people use on their eyebrows, some eyeshadow, a a blush and some kind of deep plum/berry color. I think I was 14.5.

  • Shivawn says:

My first lipstick was by Wet n Wild… Some kind of fuschia. Totally no match to my skin color but everybody else was wearing it… LOL

  • Tiffanye says:

My first kind of lipstick was a Clinique’s Almost Lipstick in Black Honey in high school. My first real purchased by me lipstick was a purple Prescriptives shade in college (1999) that they no longer make :-(

  • ONYXbeauty says:

Cherry Coke, it was a brand sold at Ricky’s in NYC. I LOVED that lipstick wore it all through college 89-93.

  • Marilyn says:

    My 1st lipstick was a Wet N Wild #32 which was like a frosted fuschia LOL…#dontjudheme :) circa 1987

  • Heather shimmer by it was either rimmel or collection 2000 about 20 years ago!

  • Ings says:

    Risque by Lancome.
The makeup artists, a friend’s mom, put it on me for my senior high school photo in 2003. It’s the most perfect purple. I still have it, wore it last night and accented it with some purple lip gloss.

  • aradhana says:

my first, purchased by me lipsticks were toast of new york, and blackberry – by revlon. toast of ny was my everyday shade, and blakcberry was more like for ‘special occasions’…it was the 90′s!

  • Caramel says:

I can’t even remember my first lipstick (I played with my mom and grammy’s a lot), but I think it was from Fashion Fair or Avon… and I’m not even sure it was a lipstick (possibly concealer stick). It was the PERFECT shade of brown for a nice nude/mocha lip. I was SO heartbroken when I lost it. I also used the mood matcher lipstick (the blue) for my 1st red lip. Then I discovered gloss and this drugstore brand called Nicka K. I still get a tube of On Time (nude brown) and Precious (sheer wine red) when I see them on display.

    Ah memories!

  • Wow what a great question. My 1st lipstick was a frosted gold color by Black Radiance. I wore it heavy with dark brown lipliner. My lips are really pink and I hated them so that’s what I used to cover them up! : )

  • My first lipstick… Revlon MoonDrops in Bamboo Bronze, a rosy/gold/pearly lippie that did my rebellious skin justice and always ALWAYS netted compliments. I thought it was a bold lip then, and it was for me. It allowed for a focal point when acne acted like it was my ride or die. I don’t have to go too far back to remember the feel and yes Lord the taste (I had no finesse lol and was forever licking my lips,if only to assure that it was still there) I was 20-something and entering the world of woman and yes if I could only have one lipstick, even as I’ve fallen head over heels for intense, traffic-stopping reds, purples, pinks and oranges I would choose my Bamboo Bronze and still feel on top of the world. Great question Bella!

  • Lily says:

It was the summer before going to high school (1994), and my mother told me I could wear lipstick once I started high school. I desperately wanted to try Wet ‘n’ Wild’s 508 and figured it was only a few months away, so I went to Revco to buy a tube. It was a very dark berry color. I received all type of compliments about my lips from the boys. You couldn’t tell me nothing that summer…until my mama caught me wearing it!

  • JOi says:

Wow. Bringing back so many memories. My first lipstick was Wet and Wild 508 also @lily. It was my 1oth grade year 1994. It was cheap and cute. I loved that lipstick. I wonder if they still make it.

  • crystal g. says:

My first lipstick was a off-brand-name that I bought at Claire’s accessories store. It was a loud dual colored lipstick in a cute clear and trendy tube. My mom bought it for me, but I was too young to wear lipstick- so it was considered my playtime lipstick :-D … but i was more of a lipgloss girl (still am)

  • My first lipstick was a Mood lipstick!!! It was blue, but then turned to a purplish pink. At 10 years old, I thought I was so hot wearing it. I wasn’t allowed to wear it outside.

Looking back, the colour actually flattered my skin tone. I tend to gravitate toward the same colour family to this day (32 years old), like Violetta, Show Orchid, and Rebel.

  • alison says:

it was a bath and body works lipstick, late 90s… i definitely remember wearing it to seventh grade classes! i can’t remember the name, but it was a deep berry color. still love the color – wish i could find a dupe for it!

  • Dove267 says:

It was a color juice stick from loreal. I forget the name but it was the brownish pink shade of the line. I would still wear it to this day if it weren’t discontinued!:(

  • Erica says:

Circa 1993, horrible orange shade of Wet N’ Wild lipstick. After that is was one of those tiny sample Avon tubes in a rose nude that was awesome.

  • Dionne says:

My very first lipstick was Chocolate Raspberry by Fashion Fair when I was in high school in the mid 80′s. Still love that color! I may have to go back:)

  • Curvy CEO says:

Revlon’s Cherries in the Snow . . . swiped from my mom :)

  • Wow, this brings back memories. I cringe when I think of it now but I loved my opal coloured lipstick that had hues of purple, blue and pink in it (if you can even imagine it).
I can’t remember the name of it but during the holidays with my tan happening and my shimmery opal lipstick, I thought I was pretty hot, lol.

  • Thinking back to the makeup I wore as a teenager makes me cringe.
